Public outrage leads to success

Keywords: pepsi co, obama administration, abortion

If you weren’t already aware, for a little over a year now there has been a tremendous boycott effort against PepsiCo, due to their use of cells derived from aborted fetuses in their flavor enhancement testing.    Back in March LifeSiteNews released an article outlining the Obama Administration’s backing of such procedures: In a decision delivered Feb 28th, President Obama’s Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) ruled that PepsiCo’s use of cells derived from aborted fetal remains in their research and development agreement with Senomyx to produce flavor enhancers falls under “ordinary business operations.”

Well, we’re happy to say that after finding themselves amid major controversy PepsiCo has announced that they, and Senomyx Inc, a biotech firm, “will not use HEK cells or any other tissues or cell lines derived from human embryos or fetuses for research performed on behalf of PepsiCo,” as stated by PepsiCo’s VP of Global Public Policy, Paul Boykas.  The anger over this topic has reached past the prolife community and touched the prochoice supporters as well.  Utilizing such cells for research and development of products like this “crossed a line” with many who are prochoice.

Keep in mind Senomyx has agreed that it isn’t in the best interest of PepsiCo. for these types of procedures to be conducted – so in regards to PepsiCo, yes… fetal cell free research… but they will not be eliminating the practice from their company in general.
